Presbyterian Church Leadership

Chapter VI. In the “Form of Government” declares “All ministry in the Church is a gift from Jesus Christ”.  Thus, based on Christ’s call, and the message of Scripture, we Presbyterians maintain that church offices include “Ministers of the Word and Sacrament”, “Elders”, and “Deacons”.  In fact the word “Presbyterian” comes from the New Testament Greek Word meaning “rule by elders”.  We believe that God calls men, women, and youth to exercise leadership in the church.  We believe that our Lord gives suitable gifts and abilities to those who, by vote of the congregation, are called to be Deacons, Elders, and Ministers of the Word and Sacrament; or, by vote of the Session, are called to serve as members of the Church’s Program Staff, or Office and Building Staff.
