Deacons:  The Ministry of Compassion and Service

DEFINED IN THE BOOK OF ORDER of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) 2017 / 2019

G-2.0201:  Deacons Defined

The ministry of deacon as set forth in Scripture is one of compassion, witness, and service, sharing in the redeeming love of Jesus Christ for the poor, the hungry, the sick, the lost, the friendless, the oppressed, those burdened by unjust policies or structures, or anyone in distress. Persons of spiritual character, honest repute, exemplary lives, brotherly and sisterly love, sincere compassion, and sound judgment should be chosen for this ministry.

G-2.0202:  Under Authority of the Session

Deacons may be individually commissioned or organized as a board of deacons. In either case, their ministry is under the supervision and authority of the session.  Deacons are the “servants” or caregivers” of the congregation.  Deacons minister to the needs of those in the congregation whether it be those who are ill, grieving, lonely or those in need of care due to hospitalization, surgery, loneliness.  Sometimes Deacons join in fellowship with those who have joyous events to celebrate.  Deacons are the hands and heart in the ministry of caring.  The Deacon Board is comprised of 18 members plus a pastor.  Each year, six Deacons rotate off the Board and six come on.   The Deacon Board commitment is for three years. Deacons are installed by Session and ordained through prayer and the laying on of hands.  Once ordained as a Deacon, they are always a Deacon and can help reach out in so many ways.   The Deacon Board is led by a moderator or co-moderator and leads monthly meetings.  Each Deacon serves on a committee, but everyone helps out across committees as needed.
